A mordern slave
Yesterday (14/04/2014) marks passover eve (פסח), a night in which Jewish people around the world commemorate their ancestor successful escape from the grasp of Pharaoh and the arrival to the promised land.
A short brief: at the year of 1313 BCE, a few hundred thousand of Hebrew slaves broke free from Pharaoh’s grip and started to wonder the desert for 40 (??) years to the holy land – Israel.
The reason for the name, is that before the Hebrew people broke free, Moses, by the request of God, asked Pharaoh to let his people go, but Pharaoh wouldn’t hear of it.
Then God decided to start showing Pharaoh that he is serious and he stroke 10 strikes, and the last one was to “remove” all the Egyptian first born’s.
That’s where the name “Passover” came from – God passed on the Hebrew first born’s.
Now, as the title of this post hints – I’m not talking about slaves of Egypt.
I’m talking about modern slaves.
It’s true that slavery in its old form is hard to find these days, but if you think about it very hard, you will see that we too became slaves, not to a person, but to our lifestyle and to what society dictates.
For example, my desire is to go on a long cycling trip – to cover most of: Europe, Asia, Australia and the U.S.
Then maybe to become a landscape designer / gardener.
But instead of doing so – I’m working in a 9-5 (or later) work, subjected to my current lifestyle and to what society dictates me I should live like.
I’m not going into if it’s right or wrong, if it’s right to live that way, because I believe that this behavior is something that was consistent by most people during the recent history.
If it’s “the American dream” and what it projects, or certain trends in the film / music industry etc.
In general, we, as a society, will act according to our close environment.
That’s how trends are being transferred from one society to another throughout the world.
I know the above might sound strange and is written a little bit “baffled” – but just give it a thought.
Are you living your life according to your true belief? and according to your actual wants and needs?
Or did you buy the new Smartphone because that’s “in” now?
Are you wearing skinny jeans because it’s actually comfortable? are you wearing high heels because it’s comfortable or because it makes your ass look good? (which is a whole different topic).
Rather if we like it or not, we are all still somewhat slaves.
The question is – if we set our mind to it, individually, not as a society, can we change?
